Consider This: Sept. 20

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - It’s been a week with lots of good news stories and we start with a 6-year-old Savannah boy who’s getting an early start on saving for college.

Tommy Johnson is one of four statewide winners of $1,500 to be placed in a college savings account by the Path2College 529 Pre-K to College sweepstakes. His Pre-K program, Charles Ellis Montessori Academy, was also awarded $529.

The sweepstakes were held across the state through a partnership with Path2College and the Department of Early Care and Learning.

It’s time once again for our area to recognize some local BigWigs.

The Komen of the Coastal Empire gathers a group of 12 community leaders and VIPS to raise money for local breast cancer patient services and education programs.

“Our and they have this friendly competition, which is great,” said Executive Director Aileen.

Each year, WTOC has had a Big Wig in the group and this year is no different. Our Meteorologist Cutter Martin is dawning the wig, and then some to help out this great cause. You can learn more about all of this year’s Big Wigs by going to KomenCoastalGeorgia.org.

And finally, Hurricane Florence may have missed our area, but it’s still touching our hearts as we watch the devastating impact on the Carolinas.

I personally got a firsthand look at the destruction in Wilmington, NC this week and I can tell you that recovery is not going to be easy.

So, if you are interested in helping, you can do so through the United Way of the Coastal Empire. You can donate, and even sign up to volunteer for Florence relief efforts by going to UWCE.org.
