Fatal wreck closes westbound lanes of I-16 in Candler County

Two traffic incidents are causing major delays on I-16

CANDLER COUNTY, GA (WTOC) - A fatal wreck has closed westbound lanes of Interstate 16 in Candler County.

The wreck is near Exit 111. Traffic is being detoured from I-16 to Pulaski and then to Metter on GA 46 before going back to I-16.

The Candler County Coroner confirms that 38-year-old Harry James Williams of Metter was killed in the crash. The driver has been treated and released.

“Right now, we don’t know why the pedestrian was on the shoulder,” said Sgt. David Bryant, Georgia State Patrol. “We don’t see any vehicles nearby that appear to be broken down or anything like that.”

Officials believe the fog may have limited the truck driver’s visibility to see a stopped car in the lane until it was too late.

Details are still very limited at this time. It is unknown how long the lanes will be closed.
