GARDEN CITY, GA (WTOC) - Garden City Police say a train carrying cargo derailed in the area of Big Hill Road and Priscilla D. Thomas Way on Tuesday night.
CSX still doesn’t know why they derailed, but train traffic was back to normal by Wednesday morning.
When it happened, four cars fell off and damaged the tracks. The company says the cars were carrying rocks to Savannah when they derailed, and around six were spilled. One neighbor in a nearby subdivision says she heard loud screeching and her home shook as the cars toppled.
CSX said in a statement Wednesday, “We apologize for the inconvenience this may have caused our neighbors in Garden City, and we appreciate their patience as we work to safely restore this area.”
Crews worked through the night to get the tracks repaired enough to keep the trains moving.
Crews and machines were back Wednesday afternoon to fix smaller details and clear some debris.
CSX says it will fully review this situation to figure out why it happened.
No injuries have been reported.
