SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - In 2017, Amy Wright was named CNN’s National Hero of the Year after starting an inspiring new business.
The North Carolina mom is now bringing that business - and the opportunities it creates in the special needs community - to Savannah.
“We love to make everyone feel welcome when they come in the door. ‘Welcome to Bitty & Beau’s.’ That’s where the smiles start, and it sets the tone for the experience they are about to have,” Wright said.
The third location of Bitty & Beau’s Coffee is opening on West Congress Street Saturday, offering a variety of specialty drinks and a sense of inclusion and opportunity that is even more special.
“Well, actually, this is my first job. I never thought I’d be working at a coffee shop,” said James Harris.
Most of the staff at Amy Wright's shop will be working for the first time.
She and her husband, Ben, started the company that hires adults with developmental disabilities three years ago in North Carolina, and named it for the two youngest of their four children - Bitty and Beau - who have Down Syndrome.
“I can tell you, 100 percent of the time, people leave here feeling good, and that’s a wonderful thing.”
This will likely become a popular stop for a morning cup or maybe a logo item, but Bitty and Beau’s is really selling change, which Amy saw in previous locations, and expects will follow in Savannah.
“We feel like this coffee shop has started a conversation within the business community to say ‘where in my business am I including someone that’s different from me,’ Wright said.
While the staff was being trained this week, the real revelation of what Bitty and Beau’s is about will begin Saturday.
“I can’t wait for Saturday and the crowd to form and to have our employees know their value and know those people came to celebrate them.”
“I’m excited for them to feel that confidence and that pride and to know that they’re really making a difference in our business and in the community.”
The grand opening for the new coffee shop at 319 West Congress Street will be held at 10 a.m. Bitty and Beau will be there in person for the ribbon cutting.
