FORT STEWART, GA (WTOC) - UPDATE: The man accused of killing a Fort Stewart soldier in Michigan will soon return to the state to face the charges against him.
This comes after he waived his extradition rights during a hearing Tuesday morning in Hinesville.
Prosecutors have charged active duty soldiers Jeremy Cuellar and Kemia Hassel with premeditated murder in the shooting death of Sgt. Tyrone Hassel III.
“The Michigan authorities that have taken out the arrest warrant will come down and pick him up and transport him back up,” said David Edwards, Liberty County Sheriff’s Office.
Prosecutors believe the motive for the killing was to continue their relationship and reap the benefits of his life insurance policy. Cuellar will return to Michigan in the next 30 days.
Members of the Fort Stewart community are in shock.
Military spouse, Cynthia Camp, has lived in Hinesville for a while. She tells WTOC she had no idea this was even going on.
“That’s sad. That’s supposed to be your other half, and to think that y’all have a child together, and you’re going to prison," Camp said. “Where is the child going to go? Who is going to raise your child? All because you wanted some money.”
She says she knew she saw Kema Hassel all the time on their military spouses Facebook page, but didn’t believe it was really her.
“She posted on that a lot, so when we saw her face, we knew her and we were like, ‘Oh my God, that’s that girl,’ and so we went back and we made sure it was her and it was her, so we’ve had conversations with her.”
She also didn’t know she lived on the same street as Jeremy Cuellar.
“You would never know what’s around you.”
In a press release, the Berrien County prosecutor in Michigan stated law enforcement believes Kemia Hassel and Jeremy Cuellar were having an affair and plotted to kill Kemia’s husband, Sgt. Tyrone Hassel, to reap the Army’s death benefits. Hassel was shot and killed outside of his parents home in Michigan on New Year’s Eve.
Days after the shooting, Kemis Hassel posted on Facebook expressing how much she missed him. She is now in a Michigan jail, charged with premeditated murder.
According to a Michigan prosecutor, a Michigan soldier on leave during the holidays was killed in a murder plot hatched by the victim’s wife and another soldier.
Kemia Hassel and Jeremy Cuellar were charged with murder on Monday in Berrien County. Prosecutor Mike Sepic says they are active duty soldiers at Fort Stewart, and were having an extramarital affair.
Army Sgt. Tyrone Hassel III was killed on New Year’s Eve after bringing food to his wife from a family gathering. The 23-year-old soldier was a native of the Benton Harbor area. He was also stationed at Fort Stewart and had a one-year-old son with his wife.
Prosecutors believe Hassel and Cuellar plotted the soldier’s death. They say the motive was to continue their relationship and reap the benefits of his life insurance policy.
Cuellar is accused of ambushing and shooting Hassel. He is in custody in Liberty County. On Tuesday morning, Cuellar waived his extradition rights during a hearing in Hinesville.
