Beaufort Co. School Board votes to get legal opinion on Islands Academy closure

BEAUFORT COUNTY, SC (WTOC) - Members of the Beaufort County School Board voted Wednesday night to get legal counsel regarding the closing of a school.

Beaufort County’s Interim Superintendent decided to lose Islands Academy back in December, citing low test scores. Now, some parents and board members say the closure violated state statutes. While the district says the closing was done by the book...

“The closure, I believe to be illegal, because it was carried out by the school district superintendent without the knowledge of the board,” said Beaufort County parent, Amanda Walrad.

“As district administration went about the closure of Islands Academy, we quite simply followed the instructions we received from the South Carolina Department of Education,” said Jim Foster, Beaufort County School District.

We’ll keep an eye on this story as it continues to develop.
