Ft. Stewart honors slain soldier

FORT STEWART, GA (WTOC) - A memorial service was held Thursday honoring Ft. Stewart soldier, Sgt. Tyrone Hassel III.

Hassel was killed while on leave on Southern Michigan over the holidays. Prosecutors have charged active duty soldiers Jeremy Cuellar and Kemia Hassel - Tyrone’s wife - with the murder.

WTOC spoke with the father of the slain soldier, who was in Hinesville for the memorial.

“It meant a lot. I got a chance to meet his other side of the family. It made me even prouder than I already was,” said Tyron Hassel, Jr., slain soldier’s father.

Police believe Kemia Hassel and Jeremy Cueller were having an affair and plotted to kill Kemia’s husband to get the Army’s death benefits.
