CLAXTON, GA (WTOC) - People all across the world with special needs will have a night that they’ll never forget on Friday.
The Tim Tebow Foundation is hosting “A Night to Shine” for the fifth year locally. The red carpet is out for all guests, the tents are up, the tables are out, and the dance floor is ready for a night they will always remember.
Eastside Baptist Church applied to be one of the 700 locations across the United States to host one of the proms. Once they found out they were selection, they immediately started planning the big event. The pastor says the event stared off small, but has now grown to 20 countries.
People with special needs who are 14 and older will get to enjoy a night of dancing, makeup touch-ups, food, and limo rides. 180 people with special needs attended the event.
Brad Burkhalter says this is a night he will never forget as he watched his brother have a special night at prom that he would not have had without this event.
“It is so important to me,” Burkhalter said. “He is one of the most important people in my life, and him enjoying tonight has just really touched my heart. I noticed all these families are really enjoying their children being here. It’s great for the community, and everybody really appreciates it.”
Organizers say they just can’t believe the support they have gotten from the community.
“547 volunteers have signed up to come and love on these people with special needs. The excitement... I just told someone, 'I don’t have time to be nervous. I’m too excited,” said Pastor Matt Brady, Eastside Baptist Church.
