You would be amazed at the challenges many young people face even before they graduate from high school. Sometimes those situations can be so difficult, some students end up dropping out of school. Then there are others who are even more motivated. They are excelling against the odds all while making significant contributions to the community. Tuesday Night, was time for them to reap the rewards of their hard work. The Savannah Morning News and The Georgia Ports Authority are honoring these outstanding students and their teachers at the Eleventh Annual Awards of Excellence Banquet. It's a very special night for everyone that became even more memorable when three went home with scholarships. William David Elmgren of Effingham County High School, Calvert M. Smith of Memorial Day School, and Candace Sampson of Groves High School all won $1,500 scholarships.
WTOC's Sonny Dixon and Savannah Morning News Editor Susan Catron served as the emcees.
