Suspect arrested, charged with Heidt murders

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - An arrest has been made in the 2008 murder case of Philip and Carey Heidt in Effingham County.

The Effingham County Sheriff's Office says around 8:45am Friday, deputies and the GBI arrested Craig Heidt. He is the son of Philip and brother of Carey and has been charged with their murders.

The Heidts were found dead in their home on Springfield Egypt Road in the early morning hours of August 25, 2008.

Phillip's wife Linda was also shot and has undergone a number of surgeries. Craig Heidt is also being charged with aggravated battery against his mother.

Investigators have said from the start they believed this was not a random killing, but they continue to be tight-lipped about this case.

"Due to the nature of this investigation, an ongoing investigation, we aren't going to answer a bunch of questions this morning," said Effingham County sheriff Jimmy McDuffie.

Craig Heidt is being held in the Effingham County Jail. Because of the holiday weekend, authorities say his first appearance before a judge will likely take place in the jail and not in a courtroom.

The next step will be to take the case to a grand jury which convenes in Effingham County on June 1.

The GBI has been in charge of the investigation.
