SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - Imperial Sugar is just about ready to get the refinery up and running. On Tuesday, the company will hold a special commemoration, marking the restart of the Imperial Sugar refinery in Port Wentworth.

Executives will discuss the significance of the milestone, the restoration of the facility and the final remaining stages of the rebuilding effort.

US representative Jack Kingston says he's excited about the company moving forward.

"I'm glad to see that they are getting back on line," said Kingston. "They are an important employer and corporate citizen for coastal Georgia and I think it's a good thing."

The packaging plant is scheduled to reopen in the fall. The old facility was destroyed in a deadly series of explosions and fire on February 7, 2008.
