LYONS, GA (WTOC) - Toombs County Sheriff's deputies, along with DEA agents and U.S. Marshalls, arrested suspects Monday in a 30-suspect federal indictment. Sheriff Alvie Kight said those charged in the indictment sold or helped in the sale of marijuana, cocaine and crack.

By early evening, they had a handful of suspects in custody. Kight said those named in the indictment were a "step higher" than the average street level dealer.

"These are the people who got the drugs to the street level folks," he said. "These arrests will have an impact on the community."

Kight said the case had been under federal investigation more than a year. He said, earlier this year, the agents had confiscated more than a dozen high-end cars and SUV's in connection with this case.

"You can't do this kind of thing without help from the help of federal agents, the GBI drug task force in Savannah. You need more manpower than we have on a regular basis," he added.

The sheriff said those arrested face at least five years in prison if convicted. Others could see life sentences if convicted, because of prior criminal histories.
