SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - The City of Savannah Tourism and Film Services Department is announcing that The Conspirator, a film to be directed by Robert Redford and produced by The American Film Company will be shot in the Savannah area in the fall.

The Conspirator will be a post-civil war drama and filming is scheduled to begin in mid-October and continue into December. It's set in post-civil war Washington and follows the trial of Mary Surratt, a woman charged with conspirating to kill Abraham Lincon. Surratt is defended by idealistic war hero Frederick Aiken and eventually believes in her innnocence.

"We are very excited about the positive impact this project will have on our community," Savannah Tourism and Film director Jay Self said in news release. "The economic impact of production will be in the millions. The wide exposure such projects bring can pay dividends for years."

Savannah was selected and unamiously recommended after extensive location scouting by The American Film Company's historians.

In 1999, Reford directed The Legend of Bagger Vance and the City of Savannah is very excited to welcome him back.
