MOUNT VERNON, GA (WTOC) - At Brewton-Parker College in Mount they have decided to get rid of many of the majors offered at the school and also to close their Norman Park and Liberty County campuses.

"My major was political science," said sophomore Joshua McPhatter.

That seems to be the common phrase at Brewton-Parker college in Mount Vernon, "was". That's because the board of trustees recently approved a measure that will cut the majors are offered by the school in half.

According to the provost, Dr. Ron Melton, that means about 18 or 19 majors that were previously offered will no longer be available at the college.

Losing about 50% of the majors at your school would seem like a big deal, but most of the students I spoke with say they are staying optimistic.

"Unfortunately it included my major, but I believe the decision will help us grow as a college and be better off for it," said McPhatter.

"It's kind of upsetting but I always try and put a positive spin on it and I plan on still sticking out here and hopefully the program will come back or I'll just switch my major and still continue on the career that I want," said freshman Courtney Jackson.

According to Dr. Melton, the majors the trustees opted to cut had the fewest students enrolled and that even though 50% of the offered majors were cut, only 10% of the student body would be affected.

One of the majors affected was the music department which only 2 years ago had a new building built and the school said they would assist the impacted students and those already in majors will have the opportunity to complete their degrees at Brewton-Parker College.
