GARDEN CITY, GA (WTOC) - Babe's BBQ Shack on Highway 80 caught fire around 1:30pm Tuesday afternoon.

Garden City Fire, Pooler Fire, and Port Wentworth Fire departments responded and were able to get fire quickly under control; however, the building did sustain heavy damage to the roof and moderate damage to the walls.

'"Found out since we have been here that the fire started in a trash can inside the restaurant," said Garden City Fire chief James Crosby. "They tried to put it out and it got into the wall and it went up like a matchbox."

Crosby also said the building is a total loss.

"It was a very popluar place, we did really really well and it certainly won't be the end of Babe's BBQ Shack, said Sam Thompkins, who helps his wife run the business. "Give it a little bit of time and we will be back open with a new building. We will be serving the same great BBQ we have been serving for the last few months."

The BBQ Shack won a couple of awards at the Hog Shop, a festival on Dean Forest Road. It was their first contest, and they placed first in a couple of categories.
