SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - As severe weather approached and student safety being their number one concern, Savannah-Chatham Public Schools let students out early. Area private schools and other public school districts soon followed.
Students in the Savannah-Chatham district were out at noon for middle and high school and 1pm for elementary students.
First student bus drivers were called in early and parents were notified through the school's emergency alert system and allowed to pick up their children from school.
District operations officer Otis Brock said they made the deicision after speaking with the Chatham Emergency Management Agency. Brock said he wanted to make sure all the buses were off the roads, especially if high winds were expected.
Both parents and students say they were happy the district made the call.
"I think it's a good idea because if it's a good powerful storm we won't be stuck at school and we will be safe with the people that we love," said student Jazmine Ellis.
"I think that it's good the Board of Education is thinking about the safety of the kids and it's a good thing," said Brenda Fields from Garden City.
Also cancelled were all after-school events. Schools will be open Thursday.
