FT. STEWART, GA (WTOC) - Warriors Walk has become one of the most somber places in America this side of Arlington Cemetary. It pays tribute to Third Infantry soldiers who died in Iraq or Afghanistan.
Two Fort Stewart soldiers recently gave their time to enhance the memorial for each of the soldiers remembered there.
Evan Hite and Americo Sedillo spent weeks welding a legacy to soldiers. The two men created these metal memorials to go at each tree in Warriors Walk. When Fort Stewart wanted the job done, they came to the 92nd Engineer Battalion.
"About the second they asked me I said I'm be more than happy to help them out to help rescue," said Spc. Americo Sedillo, 92nd Engineers.
The metal stands will hold permanent metal flags to show the unit in which each hero served. Those flags will last longer than the cloth flags that only last "so long". The two soldiers produced the hundreds of stands in just 162 hours, but those hours came above and beyond their normal days.
"Lot of early mornings, late evenings, taking maybe a half hour to eat," said Spc. Evan White, 92nd Engineers. "It's important for the families that come here to see that their areas are well taken care of."
The effort warms the heart of at least one local veteran.
"I was an engineer in the Army; I know what welders do and they did an excellent job," said veteran Paul Spence. "These trees are a memorial and they're gonna grow and these guidons we're putting down only compliment them."
Their efforts to remember fallen commrades earn Specialists Sedillo and Hite a WTOC Military Salute.
