MCINTOSH COUNTY, GA (WTOC) - Searchers have found the body of a 15-year-old boy who went missing Sunday in McIntosh County.
McIntosh County sheriff Stephen Jessup says the body of 15-year-old Daniel Gale was found Monday afternoon by a helicopter pilot.
Daniel went missing Sunday when he and his stepfather Brian Gale went into the woods around 1pm to scout out a place for turkey hunting season which starts in a few weeks.
At some point, the batteries in their GPS died and the two got lost in the woods. According to Daniel's mother Susan Gale, her husband said around 8pm, Daniel was exhausted so he left the teen to go look for a way out.
Susan says that's when her husband got lost and became completely separated from the teen.
When her son and husband still hadn't returned by midnight, she called her ex-husband, Daniel's biological father, to go look for them.
Around 3am Monday, Susan Gale's ex-husband called the McIntosh County deputies and by 5:15am, a search was underway.
Susan Gale says her current husband Brian, came out of the woods alone around 6:15am Monday.
Search teams with the Department of Natural Resources, McIntosh County Sheriff's Office and the Georgia State Patrol were searching the Altamaha Wildlife Management Area, an area from Cox Road to I-95 all the way to Glynn County.
Around 2pm Monday, searchers found guns in the woods. Later Monday afternoon, Daniel's body was found.
Sheriff Jessup says he believes Daniel may have died from hypothermia, but said his body is being sent to Savannah for an autopsy.
Daniel was a sophomore at McIntosh County Academy. His mother said he dreamed of joining the Airforce.
