MCINTOSH COUNTY, GA (WTOC) - A stunning twist in the case of a McIntosh County teen who died in the woods and marsh months ago. Thursday investigators charged his stepfather, Brian Gale with murder.
Back in March, Daniel Gale went looking for hunting spots in the woods with his stepfather. Somehow they got lost. Daniel stayed behind, while his stepfather went searching for help.
Eventually his stepfather made it to the road and got help, but when they went back to find Daniel, they found him dead. He'd died of hypothermia and drowning.
The news his stepfather was arrested is not surprising folks in McIntosh County. They say they suspected this all along.
"They should have arrested him," said Diane Moody. "First of all, he said he was so familiar with that area, he should have never taken the kid off of the area he was familiar with and took him out to the water."
Donna Miller agrees, "Why would he leave him, then want to come back? You take him with you, something happens to the both, fine. You don't leave a child behind."
"His stepfather knew those woods like that back of his hand. There's no way that he could leave his child there and not feel guilty. I don't care if it took my life. I wouldn't leave my child to be stranded in the woods," said Taylor Hill.
We don't know what led authorities to arrest Brian Gale, but we do know they're charging him with child cruelty and felony murder.
