GBI investigates Statesboro police shooting

STATESBORO, GA (WTOC) - Georgia Bureau of Investigation agents are looking at a police shooting that left one officer wounded and a suspected shooter dead.  It happened just after 10 p.m. on Wednesday off of U.S. Highway 301, south on Rucker Lane.

Statesboro Police say one of their officers went to an apartment complex for a loud noise complaint. They say the officer confronted a man about his car stereo. Police say the man pulled a gun and fired at the officer, then ran off. Other police and sheriff's deputies were close by and surrounded the man. When he wouldn't drop the gun, police say, deputies shot and killed the suspect.

Special Agent Micah Ward of the GBI's Statesboro office says the law gives peace officers the same rights, no more or less, to self defense as ordinary citizens.

"The law asks 'did the officer have a reasonable fear the person would do the harm and did the person have opportunity and ability to inflict bodily harm or deadly force on them," Ward stated.

Statesboro's Public Safety Director says the shooting is the department's first in almost 30 years.
