Thousands Flock to Antique Road Show

Many of you have probably seen the antique road shows that airs on Georgia Public Television. It's a huge event - and this weekend - they're taping right here in the Coastal Empire.

W ith their arms full of what they hope to be treasures, nearly 7,000 people are get their items appraised for the very first time.

Peppar Head from Buchanan, Georgia, brought in a table her mother bought for $25 at an antique store.

"She bought it near Buchanan in Cedartown, and when she brought it in, we said, 'Mother, that has got to be the ugliest table I have seen in my life,'" said Peppar, as she laughed.

But no matter how it looks, that table could be worth a lot of money. After waiting in line for nearly an hour, an appraiser finally took a good look at it.

In the meantime, several other people took their things to get a special look, many of them pleased with the results. Cathryn Davis of Savannah brought in some Indian jewelry.

"I thought (the bracelet) might be worth a couple hundred dollars and he told me it was. I paid 35 dollars for it 38 years ago. I think I paid 15 for this (pin) and it's probably valued at 75 dollars."

And for all the people that show up to the Antique Road Show, there are only about 70 appraisers and for them it's a big honor to be part of the show.

"You never know, you may see a days worth of junk, and then all of a sudden, something really important walks in," said appraiser, Bruce Shackleford.

As for the unique tabletop: It may not be what some would consider a total treasure, but the appraiser told Peppar Head, the 25 dollar pick is worth a whole lot more.

"She said it was valued at over 400-500 dollars. I think it's a good appraisal. I'm very pleased," said Peppar.

You can catch the Antique Road Show on Georgia Public Television on Monday evenings. Three shows will come out of everything taped in Savannah this weekend, but it won't air until somtime after January of next year.
