Firefighters battle blaze on Ogeechee Road

GARDEN CITY, GA (WTOC) - Battling fires are hard enough, but imagine firefighters not having a water source and trying to get water to the fire in rush hour traffic.

It happened in the middle of Chatham County on Ogeechee Road between Buckhalter and Salt Creek at Plantation Mobile Estates.  It's the second major fire in that stretch of Ogeechee in just the past few weeks.

At the fire at Plantation Mobile Estates you could tell from just seeing the smoke that getting the fire under control wouldn't be easy.  There any fire hydrants nearby, so firefighters had to truck it in on tanker trucks. "It becomes a lot more challenging," said Assistant Chief Hugh Futrell with Southside Fire.

Futrell knows all about those challenges. He's dealt with this very issue for years. Just last January another fire broke out on Ogeechee Road at the Savannah Motor Lodge and again no water in sight. Firefighters had to rely heavily on the tankers to get to them in a hurry. "Tankers are vehicles, they ride down the roads, they are mechanical, they have problems like anything else," said Futrell. "We have traffic on Highway 17 that comes into play, getting on and off Highway 17 to get to where the hydrants are; all these things come into play and slow down the process."

The other issue firefighters faced was the smoke covering the road. "They can't see. They don't know what's in the smoke," said Futrell about drivers on the road. "There might be a fire truck parked there, there might be an ambulance parked there, there might be a group of firefighters rolling out a line."

Fortunately no one was hurt and the tankers were able to get to the fire quickly, but next time it could be a different story.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but firefighters believe it started on the back side of the house.
