Pat Prokop's Weather Blog and Current Weather Discussion

Updated:
Weather Summary and Discussion:
Friday, Late Afternoon, November 20, 2009
Continued Mild:
High pressure is over the region resulting in generally fair and mild weather.  This will continue through the night into early tomorrow morning.  Clouds will begin to increase during the day tomorrow as a low pressure system moves out of the Gulf of Mexico and aims toward our area.  It looks like the rain will hold off until after sunset and more likely until midnight.

Wet Sunday:
The rain system will move through the region Sunday with rain likely.  There could even be a thunderstorm but I am not expecting any severe weather and total rain fall should be less than an inch before all said and done by before sunrise Monday.

Fair Next Week:
Fair weather will follow for Monday afternoon through Wednesday with mild temperatures.  A dry cold front will enter the region Wednesday night and will usher in some cool dry air for Thanksgiving day and the day after.  Looks like highs will be in the 60s with overnight lows in the 40s for then.

Winter Outlook:
The outlook for December-February from NOAA indicates that the current El Nino pattern will continue and perhaps even increase in strength.  This would give us above normal rainfall and below normal temperatures.  However, the temperature forecast is a bit deceiving as the daytime highs will be the cooler portion of that value.  The nighttime temperatures are usually warmer than normal around here.  This is due to more clouds and rain associated with a strong El Nino.  The coldest nights of the winter are usually above 20 degrees in Savannah during El Nino Winters as compared to 12 to 15 degrees.  Also, expect to see stronger Gulf of Mexico storms during the winter months.  These also can cause an increase in tornado activity in our area with storms in the pre-dawn hours not uncommon when those system move through our area.  More information can be found at

Ominous looking but harmless "Mammatus" clouds. These are produced by sinking air usually on the backsides of a thunderstorm's anvil
