Weather Summary and Discussion:

Thursday, Late Afternoon, September 2, 2010

Hurricane EARL:
Hurricane Earl is now past Savannah and Hilton Head moving away. The storm passed the area during the mid afternoon by about 350 miles. Max winds have decreased to 115 mph and will approach the Outer Banks of North Carolina overnight with the center of the storm remaining out to sea.

Tropical Weather:
Other than Earl, two other storms are in the Atlantic.  Tropical storm Fiona has 50 mph winds and was south of Bermuda.  This storm will not strengthen much more and will follow a path further east of Earl and is not a threat to us.  Much further east is "Gaston".  This storm is about 2,500 miles from us but will be moving westward.   However, it now appears this storm will dissipate or become absorbed by another large system emerging off the coast of Africa.  Computer model are picking up on something out there but are very slow in bringing it across the ocean which means they might have picked up on Gaston but then became overwhelmed by the new system coming off the African coast. Needless to say, keep an eye on the tropics but it looks like it will be all quiet for us for the next 12 to 14 days.

Labor Day Holiday Weekend:
As mentioned earlier, if you were not connected to the media, you would never know that a hurricane was passing by the region.  The subsidence of the air behind this storm kept our sky clear and the temperatures hot.  This dry air mass will continue to flow over the region over the long Labor Day holiday weekend.  A weak and dry cold front will pass through the area over the weekend but will only cause a 6-9 degree drop in temperatures.  Expect more rich blue skies with very pleasant mornings and mostly sunny and hot afternoons but with low humidity values through the middle of next week.

Ominous looking but harmless "Mammatus" clouds. These are produced by sinking air usually on the backsides of a thunderstorm's anvil
