TWINS-BRAVES
Teheran pitches Braves past Twins
ATLANTA (AP) - Julio Teheran pitched 8 1-3 strong innings, Dan Uggla hit a three-run homer and the Atlanta Braves won their fourth straight game with a 5-1 victory over the struggling Minnesota Twins on Monday.
Teheran (3-1) gave up five hits, one run - Josh Willingham's homer in the ninth - and one walk. He struck out four, throwing 80 of his 123 pitches for strikes.
Cory Gearrin earned his first career save by retiring pinch-hitter Oswaldo Arcia on a flyout.
Minnesota has lost six straight.
The previous longest career outing for Teheran was seven innings, a mark he reached in a no-decision April 29 against Washington and a May 9 victory at San Francisco.
After rallying in late innings to win three straight from the Los Angeles Dodgers over the weekend, Atlanta jumped on Twins starter Kevin Correia (4-4) early.
SEC TOURNAMENT
Vanderbilt, LSU headline expanded SEC tournament
(AP) - Vanderbilt and LSU are the favorites to win this week's Southeastern Conference tournament after mowing through regular-season play with uncommon ease.
The real intrigue, however, is the new single-elimination format in the opening round of the tournament.
Instead of the usual double-elimination format, the league's coaches say the sudden-death round was done because of scheduling and the expansion of the tournament field from 10 to 12 teams.
The top four seeds receive a bye to the second round, where double-elimination play begins.
Several teams with borderline NCAA tournament hopes will play crucial games during the opening knockout round, including Auburn and Texas A&M.
Play begins Tuesday morning at Hoover Metropolitan Stadium in Hoover, Ala.
No. 1 seed Vanderbilt set an SEC record with 26 league wins this season.
NASCAR-ALLGAIER
Allgaier thrives despite changes to NASCAR team
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - NASCAR Nationwide driver Justin Allgaier started the season with a new car, a new crew chief and a relatively new pit crew.
The changes haven't led to a victory, but Allgaier is confident that the No. 31 car is set to blossom into a winner in the weeks ahead.
Allgaier is currently fourth in the Nationwide standings, just one point behind Elliott Sadler and 43 behind series leader Regan Smith. Allgaier will run again on Saturday at the Charlotte Motor Speedway.
ACC AWARDS
UNC's Moran named ACC player of year
GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) - North Carolina third baseman Colin Moran is the Atlantic Coast Conference's player of the year and teammate Kent Emanuel is its pitcher of the year.
The ACC announced its postseason awards Monday. Virginia outfielder Joe McCarthy was selected as the freshman of the year while the Cavaliers' Brian O'Connor is its coach of the year.
Moran leads the nation with 83 RBIs and hit .376 while becoming the seventh UNC player to win the ACC award and first since current Seattle Mariners second baseman Dustin Ackley in 2009.
Emanuel went 9-3 with a 2.28 ERA and became the third UNC pitcher to win the award since its creation in 2005.
McCarthy hit .333 and reached base in 36 consecutive games for the Cavaliers (45-9, 22-8).
SOUTH ALABAMA-TRANSFER
Former Tide WR Woodson transfers to South Alabama
MOBILE, Ala. (AP) - Former Alabama receiver Danny Woodson is transferring to South Alabama.
Woodson, who grew up in Mobile, played in six games and had one catch as a redshirt freshman for the Crimson Tide in 2012.
He will have to sit out this coming season because of NCAA rules and will have two years of eligibility left.
The 6-foot-1, 195-pound Woodson was suspended for a violation of team rules at Alabama during the spring and did not participate in offseason workouts with the team.
Last season was South Alabama's first as a member of FBS, competing in the Sun Belt Conference.
