The blaze started Friday afternoon on Smiley Crossroads, and spread rapidly, forcing fire crews to close that road.

More than 40 firefighters from surrounding areas including Long Co, Midway, Riceboro and Hinesville, were sent out to help to try to get the blaze under control.

Fire officials say flames spread quickly, endangering buildings nearby but no evacuations have been ordered.

"We have not called for any evacuation yesterday or today on these fires. We're a lot better today, as far as containment on these fires, than we were yesterday and I don't think there's anything for the residents to worry about at this time," said Capt. Alex Mason, of the Ludowici-Long Co. Fire Dept.

Officials say that there are five separate fires, one of them includes the area on Pearl Davis Road, which caught fire back in March. They say of the five fires, three of them have been contained.

The fire department has set up defensive blockades to protect those structures.

The community is coming together to support the firefighters, EMS and other emergency management workers.
