ATLANTA - Nearly 35 years after Bobby Jones' death, the golf legend continues to draw a gallery, one or two patrons at a time, to Historic Oakland Cemetery.
Most visitors do not come to Jones' grave as casual observers. They come as golf pilgrims on missions to commune with him and often to leave a gift for the man who won 13 majors.
There are usually a dozen or so golf balls spread in the grass like Easter eggs below the headstone Jones shares with his wife Mary.
Some visitors leave different items - golf tees, business cards, scoring pencils and even clubs. Others leave mail which continues to touch Jones' grandson, Bob Jones the Fourth of McDonough.
The continued demonstrations of devotion to Jones are a contrast to his wish that his burial on Dec. 20, 1971, be as small and understated as possible.
The service took 10 minutes. There was no eulogy.
