Million Dollar Check Awarded to Savannah-Chatham Schools

Learning should be fun, and a million dollar check to Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools will help fund creative ways to teach American history.

This morning, Rep. Jack Kingston (R-GA Dist. 1) presented the big check to school leaders at the Massie Heritage Center.

It's a grant from the US Department of Education for the Teaching American History program. All the money will go toward educating teachers and finding hands-on ways to teach kids about our history.

Candy Lowe is the principal at Massie and the instructional director of social studies. "I notice a difference when I go into schools and I see American history everywhere, on the bulletin boards in the hall, in teachers' classrooms, just all sorts of exciting and engaging activities," she said. "Teachers are excited and their enthusiasm spreads to the kids."

This is the fourth year Savannah-Chatham schools have received the grant.
