
Air show crash news conferenceA Blue Angels jet crashed during the Marine Corps Air Station Air Show in Beaufort Saturday afternoon.
The jet went down around 4 pm during the final minutes of the air show, crashing on Piney Grove Road, just three miles outside the airfield complex. Several homes were damaged in the crash and at least eight people were taken to the hospital. The pilot of the plane died in the crash. They are not releasing his name at this time.
The crash is under investigation and the Blue Angels are not commenting at this time on what maneuvers they were doing when jet crashed.
The other five Blue Angel jets were not involved and landed moments later.
During a news conference at the Marine Corps Air Station Saturday night, LCDR Anthony Walley said, "Our squadron and the entire U.S. Navy are grieving in the loss of a great American, a great naval officer, but most of all a great friend. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family this evening who were at the air show."
The air show has not been canceled for Sunday, but the Blue Angels will not be performing.
The Blue Angels are a U.S. Navy precision flight team known for their aerobatic performances.
