May Howard Elementary School will now have plenty of trees on their playground thanks to a $10,000 grant sponsored by the Georgia Forestry Commission.
The elementary school is getting 45 new trees that will shade the playground and provide outdoor educational lessons for students.
PTA chair Alicia Rootes says she has been working on getting the trees for three years and is glad the day is finally here. "Everybody knows how hot it can be in Savannah and play ground equipment gets hotter because it's metal so we wanted to shade the children," said Rootes.
May Howard Elementary School volunteers, PTA members and the Savannah tree foundation will begin planting the trees in the fall.
