St. James Catholic School Moves Into the 21st Century

Have you ever heard of a smart board? Smart boards are new technology designed to move classrooms farther into the 21st century.

They have touch screens, the ability to run all kinds of educational software, and record and capture notes.

They are interactive white boards which require students to participate in class during each lesson.

So whether it's English or history, students at St. James Catholic School are learning how to use them, as well as teachers like Awbrey Smith love.

"We can help integrate what kids are doing and what I am doing, and they can see what I do on the board so they aren't lost," said Smith. "I can move pictures, touch the screen, and they can see what I am doing and interact with their computers."

But are they actually helping students learn? Eight grader Jordan Spivey says yes. "You can go on websites and see a ton of different stuff and the whole class can see it," Jordan told us.

St. James had three of the smart boards last year, but now has ten more. Their goal is to make sure all their students are exposed to this new technology.

"I think a lot of children are visual learners and so it really does help them to see what I am doing instead of me lecturing," said Smith.

A smart idea that's changing the way students learn one touch at a time.

Each smart board costs around $2,500.
