National School Bus Safety Week

You count on bus drivers to get your kids safely to and from school, but there are plenty of things we can all do to help keep kids safe.

This is National Bus Safety week, so First Students plans drills on buses to rehearse what they need to do in emergencies.

But when you see a bus on the streets, you need to pay extra attention. "They should realize that sometimes children can change their minds," said Kim Dempsey with Beaufort Elementary School. "They should be watching for children who have been dropped off to make sure a child has not changed his or her mind and decides to cross the street."

Some other safety reminders, when you see a stopped school bus with the lights flashing, you have to stop. You should stay at least 20 feet away from a school bus. Once buses drop off the kids, be extra careful as kids can sometimes dart across the street, not always looking.
