Last Minute Preparations for Stubbs Tower Implosion

SAVANNAH, GA--Just a few hours left until the Stubbs Tower comes down. Demolition crews spent most of the day finalizing their plan for tomorrow's implosion.

But how do nearby residents feel about the extra safety measures in place and tomorrow's implosion?

After tomorrow morning, the 15-story Stubbs Tower will be no more.

"We're going to use explosives to have gravity help us get it on the ground," said D.H. Griffin Division Manager Paul Ferguson.

Demolition crews have been on site since before September removing all the hazardous materials and dealing with structural preparation for Saturday's implosion. Today workers placed the last of the explosives and set up extra debris barricades.

"I still have a lot of my guys still here on site tightening up the last few details of the adjacent property mainly for protection and making sure everyone's out of harms way when we do this tomorrow," said Ferguson.

Demolition crews say that with all the time and effort put into securing the Stubbs Tower they expect the implosion to go as planned, but nearby residents' opinions vary on how the implosion will actually go

"When it comes down there's no telling what's going to happen so I'm going to be away from here," said neighbor Major Robinson.

"Well the way they talk about it, it seems pretty good. I never seen a building go down like they say it's supposed to," said neighbor Paul Burch.

Paul Burch and his wife actually moved into the Stubbs Tower back in the 80s and lived there for five years.

"It was a home for me because that's the only home I had in Savannah," said Burch.

Burch now lives next door in plain view of what was once his home. He still is coming to grips that it will be gone.

"I thought I would've gone before the building go but the building is going before me," said Burch.

With weeks worth of planning and preparation, the people pushing the button are optimistic.

"Everything's right on schedule and we should be ready tomorrow morning," said D.H. Griffin's Paul Ferguson.

A two block radius surrounding the tower will be blocked off. We will have crews out their tomorrow morning live covering the implosion of the Stubbs Tower.
