The 15-story building was once home to many senior citizens. They were forced to find new homes when the building flooded in 2004. It had been vacant ever since.
Some of Stubb's Tower's former residents, like Jacquelene Lanier, were watching WTOC this morning, as their old home came down. For Lanier, it was a bittersweet experience.
Jacquelene Lanier watched on WTOC as her old home and 20 years of memories crumbled to the ground.
"It dropped. It all started falling down," she said. "I thought they were just going to show it one time but every time we turned around that thing was going down, going down! I really enjoyed seeing it come down like that, but I hated it when we had to move."
Lanier lived at Stubb's Tower from 1984 to 2004. When the building flooded, she moved from her home and away from many of her friends.
"We were so close," Lanier said. "All of the folks were there. Everybody knew everybody. Everybody got along so good together."
While she has since found a new place to live with new and old friends, looking at all that remains of what was once her home is still a tough sight to see.
"It had been home and I thought that was the last time I would have to move," she said.
The Housing Authority of Savannah said the site where Stubb's Tower once stood will become a park.
