SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - A car theft suspect is off the streets after police say he tried to ram a police car during a high-speed chase.
Savannah-Chatham police chased the car west on Victory Drive about 1am Friday morning. The chase ended minutes later when the driver of a Chevrolet Impala slammed into a chain-link fence at Augusta Avenue and Jenks Street.
The man ran off on foot, but a police K-9 unit tracked him down about a half a block away on Brittany Street.
During the chase, an officer who was driving on West Gwinnett had to veer out of the way as the suspect tried to crash into his police car. The officer used defensive tactics and had to run off the road, damaging the bumper of his cruiser. He was not hurt.
Police have identified the suspect as Maurice Antwan James, 21, wanted for three outstanding probation violations as well as being sought in connection with two other car thefts.
The suspect is facing charges, including aggravated assault on a police officer, possession of controlled substance, fleeing to elude police, theft by receiving stolen property, false name/address to police, and multiple traffic violations.
