COBBTOWN, GA (WTOC) - Randy Byrd said the tornado offered no warning before it cut its path through Cobbtown.
"Like I was telling my friend, it lasted less than 30 seconds," said Byrd.
Across the street from Randy, Cobbtown's only gas station, a Timesaver, was reduced to rubble. One customer and a clerk were inside but weren't hurt. The storm also hit homes, trees, and even churches in its path.
"Ran approximately six miles through here," said Jim Anderson, Tattnall EMA volunteer. "We have 19 structures with either slight or extensive damage."
In northern Toombs County, damage was more compact. Some mobile homes appeared okay until you saw them upside down.
Beverly Mincey raced from work to Normantown to see what was left of her home.
"I don't know what insurance covers and to what extent, but everything's lost, my children's clothes, all my clothes," said Mincey.
As folks looked through damaged and destroyed homes to see what they could save, the continuing rain didn't help.
"We getting them out of the rain so we can assess their needs and we've got temporary shelter for them right now," said Donna Lee of the American Red Cross.
Meanwhile crews worked to get power restored and many used tarps to keep rain from destroying what was left.
At the Timesaver, employees cleared coolers and shelves and gave everything to the Red Cross for them to help customers who had nowhere else to turn.
