BEAUFORT, SC (WTOC) - Help is on the way for better fire safety in Hardeeville.

Hardeeville Fire Rescue will soon have six more firefighters, thanks to a grant from the Department of Homeland Security. The $650,000 grant will pay part of the six new firefighter's salaries for five years.

"It increases the resources we have available to respond immediately to any emergency that may arise in the community and it also provides an added level of safety of our firefighters and volunteers that are on duty," said Dan Morgan with Hardeeville Fire.

The grant is awarded through the SAFER Act, or Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response act. The SAFER Act has awarded over $180 million in fund to fire departments this year.
