HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC (WTOC) - The Third Annual Down Syndrome Buddy Walk is tomorrow on Hilton Head Island.

Caroline Mayers loves riding her bike and playing with her sisters. She may have down syndrome, but she certainly doesn't let that hold her back. In fact, this little girl is making a big difference in the lives of many who have Down Syndrome.

"We started the Buddy Walk because after Caroline was born with Down Syndrome we came to the realization there is lots of misinformation out there about Down Syndrome," said Caroline's mother Kathleen Mayers.

With Buddy Walk, Caroline's parents Mick and Kathleen raise money and awareness that help other families like theirs and help fund the foundation they've started called Caroline and Friends.

It's also a way to share their family joys.

"There's really nothing different about our lives because she has Down Syndrome, it's just better," said Kathleen. "She's made our lives better."

And they're doing their part to get the real story out.

"We're creating a brochure for hospitals and OB's to give out to patients if they choose to read it and that gives them more positive information than we were given when Caroline was born," said Kathleen.

The Mayers say they have had a strong support system over the years and they want to give that to other families.

"We've been blessed and there's people who don't have the access to the resources and I think it's fair we share it with them," said Mick Mayers.

Through their foundation, they're giving out scholarships to help others like Caroline get the best treatment they can, making Caroline and her family WTOC Hometown Heroes.

The Buddy Walk is tomorrow at the rear parking lot of the mall at Shelter Cove on Hilton Head Island from 4pm to 7pm.

They'll have all kinds of things for the whole family including trick or treating for the kids.
