MANASSAS, GA (WTOC) -The holiday weekend ends an era in one community. In the Tattnall County town of Manassas, the post office closes Saturday when postmaster Grace Powell retires. She's contracted with the U.S. Postal Service to run a post office the past 23 years.

The government decided not to offer service any more. She says she's enjoyed a special relationship with the town's 200 residents over the years.

"I do the same work as they do in a main post office. I'm just not as busy as they are. But you don't get the same personal service as you do here," she explained.

Powell was Manassas' ninth postmaster. Customers will now have to travel 15 miles away to Claxton for a post office box or to get their mail.
