Reverend Michael GuidoMETTER, GA (WTOC) - The chapel at the Guido Gardens seems even more reverent than usual. Dr. Michael Guido's death over the weekend shocked no one but seems to sadden everyone. Mayor Billy Trappnell said The Sower represented Metter as well as anyone in elected office.
"To be able to visit his office, meet with him and have prayer was as close to being in the presence of the Lord as you can get," Trappnell said.
By television, radio and newspaper, his sermons reached across the nation. Friends say Michael Guido was the same person in person as he was over the airwaves.
"He loved everyone and wanted to help anyone and wanted everyone to know about Jesus Christ," said Jean Melton, a friend and a niece of Reverend Guido's wife, Audrey.
"He and Audrey never asked for money. That was their agreement and the Lord always provided," Trappnell added.
For decades, the Guidos and their staff used a bulletin board to identify needs of equipment or materials and prayed for them until they arrived. Melton worked in the Guido's office part time as a teen.
"There was never, not ever one thing on that board that was a personal want. It was all for the work of God," she said.
"I was privileged to know him 50 years and at the end of those 50 years, he was just as genuine and humble and a servant of the Lord as he was at the beginning," Trappnell noted.
Both said the local folks who knew and loved "their Doctor Guido" may never fully understand his impact all over the world.
