CANDLER COUNTY, GA (WTOC) - A fire at a rural home in the Western part of the county near the Toombs County border claimed the life of a 6-year-old girl early Sunday morning.

Investigators with the Candler County Sheriff's Office tell WTOC that around 2am Sunday, July 12 the fire broke out while the homeowner was hosting a slumber party for several little girls.

Of the two adults and six children in the house at the time, everyone made it out except for a visiting 6-year-old girl who died in the fire.

The Candler County Sheriff's Department also said that one adult resident, Luther Harrison, tried to rescue the girl and was badly burned.

He was flown to the Joseph M. Still Burn Center in Augusta where he is listed in serious condition.

The child's body is at the GBI crime lab for indentification and an autopsy.
