Chief Greg Long shows off the truck's new GPS system. The growing community of Port Wentworth is getting some much needed help when it comes to fighting fires. A 2006 Pierce Contender is the newest member of the Port Wentworth Fire Department.
The truck is the first piece of equipment the fire department's purchased since 1998. It's outfitted with a brand new set of rescue tools, medical gear and radio technology. It even has a laptop and GPS system that'll save firefighters precious minutes when responding to emergencies.
"Using the GPS system with this truck, while we're on route to a fire call, we can locate where the hydrant is while we're pulling up into the specific subdivision," explained Port Wentworth Fire Chief Greg Long. "We'll know exactly where our water supply will be located."
The truck was purchased with SPLOST money. It replaces three older trucks that were taken out of service.
