SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - Savannah-Chatham Metro Police are cracking down on people not using crosswalks correctly.

They canvassed the downtown area in full force today, handing out tickets to violators. Many of the violations were for jaywalking. The fines carry a fine of up to $200.

Meanwhile, Corporal Janessa Stalter says they are keeping their eye on motorists too.

"The minute a citizen steps into the crosswalk the drivers have to be cognicient of their surroundings. So they have to yield to them," Stalter said.

Most motorists were ticketed for stopping in a pedestrian crosswalk. Since last Tuesday, more than 267 tickets have been issued.
