SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - It was a showdown between Hesse and Southwest Elementary Schools, and the competition was fierce.

They were among nine schools meeting at Haven Elementary Wednesday morning to see who was the best of the best when it comes to remembering the details of what they've read this year.

"Well, I expect that we're going to do good," said student Kevin Williams of Southwest Elementary School.

"These students have been reading books all year that are on the list, there's a certain list of books that are used for this and they have to read very, very carefully and then they're asked questions about those books," said media specialist Deborah Hargroves.

She's talking about various books on the Georgia Children's Book Awards list, all works of fiction dealing with different subjects.

Out of the five books he's read, Kevin's favorite book is "Midnight Magic".

"I'm just interested in castles and mysteries," said Williams.

"It encourages students to read, and of course we're all about that in the school system and trying to encourage the students to have a love for reading and reading these quality books," said Hargroves.

These students are passionate about the competition, and each team of five wants to win.

But they've also learned readers make leaders, so no matter which team gains the most points by the end of the day, they are all already victorious.

Elementary and middle school students from 25 schools are competing Wednesday and Thursday at three different sites throughout the area.

This is the 12th year for the competition.
