BRYAN COUNTY, GA (WTOC) - A new middle school is in the works for one community that has outgrown its old one.
Richmond Hill broke ground for a new school off Belfast-Keller Road and Old Warren Hill Road. It's the first shovel of many at the new site for the Richmond Hill Middle School which will help ease the growing pains of the current school.
"Our middle school and high school in Richmond Hill are currently over populated," said interim superintendent John Oliver.
Principal of Richmond Hill Middle School Helen Herndon will continue her duties at the new site and says the extra room will allow them to grow and offer students more programs.
"People move to Richmond Hill for the school system and this is the way they the county is paying back for the parents who work so hard to live here," said Herndon.
The entire project will cost $30 million. It's going to be covered by Esplost and some local and state funding.
Once the middle school is complete, school board chairman Eddie Warren says a high school will be next.
"This whole project is not just the middle school, but this is 100 acres and gives us space to grow," said Warren.
Congressman Jack Kingston says this is proof the people of Richmond Hill are supportive of their school system.
"This area which is a remote part of the county is betting there will be families and school kids," said Kingston.
"This is a project that has put everyone together coming together to help the children of Bryan County," said Warren.
The school should be finished in about two years.
