Military moms coming together to help troops serving overseas rest easier

BEAUFORT, SC (WTOC) - Beaufort may be thousands of miles away from Iraq and Afghanistan, but the work going on at Harris Pillow Company will help those serving overseas get a better night's rest. They're making hundreds of pillows to send to servicemen and women as part of Pillows for Patriots.

"Hopefully it helps them rest a lot easier, a lot better, they're great pillows, very comfortable, very portable," said Barb Farrior.

Farrior got the idea after watching a news segment about similar effort and wanted to do her part to help her son Justin and his company rest a little easier during their deployment to Iraq.

"It made me feel good that we added just a little bit of comfort to a tedious trip over there and a long stay over there," said Farrior.

But that was just the start. Jenny Bush, who's son Jonathan is currently serving in Afghanistan quickly jumped on board. Harris Pillow Supply did too, donating the first 150 pillows and will make the rest as donations come in.

"It was a no brainer, we'd like to do our pat for what they're doing for us," said Patrick Harris.

In return for all of this work, the Harris family has one request.

"We hope all that sleep on them comes home safe, that's all," said John Harris.

While this project is fairly new, it's gotten a lot of support from people all over.

"We've received donations from as far as California and I was called by someone in Knoxville, Tennessee. I was contacted by someone in Arkansas," said Farrior.

"We've raised 12-thousand dollars and shipped five thousand pillows," said Jenny Bush.

These military mom's say they've been amazed at the response they've been getting from the project, including a letter from a Lance Corporal serving in Afghanistan saying, "... getting these care packages make life over here that much better means more than to us than words can express. I'd like to thank you for your patriotism and support."

While these two women have certainly put in a lot of long hours into this project, they say knowing our troops are getting a better night's rest, helps them sleep a little easier.

"The adrenaline is flowing when they're on patrol so when they do have a chance to lay their heads down at least they have a comfortable place to put their heads, so it's comforting, we sleep better," said Jenny Bush.

In the next few weeks, they're going to be shipping 1,100 pillows to an entire battallion of Marines in California, who will be replacing Jenny's Bush's son's battallion in Afghanistan. But they're looking to expand this program even more especially in the Savannah area.

If you know a service member serving in Iraq or Afghanistan, or if you'd like to make a donation, please contact Pillows for Patriots.
