SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) – One area group is making sure no child is forgotten.

On Saturday Safe Kids Savannah, the Police Department's Marine Unit and the Wesley Community Center hosted a child safety day, to teach parents how to keep their children safe from accidents and abuse.

They held the event at healing field, in front of the National Guard Armory.

This year more than 1,000 American flags are on display. They represent each child that was reported abused or neglected in Chatham county last year.

"We want to emphasize child safety in general. Whether it is abuse or injury prevention. Injury prevention is the leading cause of death for children under the age of 14, and in our field this year their are 1,665 flags and we know by statistics for every reported case there are 3-to-5 that go unreported," said Safe Kids of Savannah Coordinator Alison Gramza.

The healing field will be open until November 15, 2009.
