Savannah set with New Year's Eve activities

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) – As the crowds downtown grew, the countdown to the countdown seemed to start.

"We hope so,'' said Josh Pair, the general manager of Wild Wing Cafe in City Market. "We hope tomorrow night this is it right here in City Market.''

And throughout the Historic District with New Year's Eve activities planned inside, outside and all around.

There'll be fireworks on River Street.

A New Year's ball at the Westin on Hutchinson Island.

And at most downtown restaurants, dinner specials, such as three courses for $30 after 9pm at Ruth's Chris Steakhouse.

"There's an electricity in the air, which is good for us,'' said Stephen Horner, Ruth's Chris GM. "We just hope everyone that's out that evening knows they can come for dinner, after-dinner drinks and we're going to be having a great time and a great party all night.''

And in Savannah, the biggest party will once again be at City Market which has become the city's New Year's Eve hub.

"Well, I think over the years when we've pulled everything together,'' said Pair. "It's finally become the place and destination for your midnight festivities on New Year's Eve.''

It will be again Thursday night with live music, confetti and a 70-foot screen outside Wild Wing showing the ball drop in Times Square.

But perhaps something big city celebrations can't boast.

"It's a family atmosphere with the horse and buggy rides and the river boats and things,'' said Pam Krpejs, who is visiting from Winston Salem, North Carolina with her two sons. "It's just, you feel safe with your kids.''

Not that there isn't adult fun available as well.

"Everyone's happy and most everyone is drunk, which is OK,'' said Joel Caplan, who owns Cafe Gellato in City Market. "We close a little early because my girls who work for me, they know about getting drunk but they really don't know about serving drunks. So we let them go about 10pm so they can go have their parties.''

And those should be easy to find in Savannah Thursday night.
