PORT WENTWORTH, GA (WTOC) - The City of Port Wentworth is getting its own waste water treatment facility.

City and state leaders held a ceremonial groundbreaking Friday morning, even though the plant is already under construction.

It's located in the Savannah River International Trade Park off Georgia Highway 21. Officials say this plant will improve the water quality of the Savannah River and save tax payers some money in the long run.

"I am very excited this day has finally come about," mayor Glenn Jones said. "We've had a lot of controversial topics about where we should be, what we should build or if we should join someone else. but it's a monumental occasion for the City of Port Wentworth, we finally made the decision ,so we are here to have a groundbreaking and get it going."

Construction of the new waste water treatment facility should be done by the summer of 2011.
