SPRINGFIELD, GA (WTOC) - It wasn't your typical traffic stop. Instead of pulling over a car, a deputy pulled over a riding lawn mower and got a whole lot more than he bargained for.

On May 5 at around at 4:30am, deputy Andrae Wright with the Effingham County Sheriff's Office saw a man driving down US Highway 17 on a lawn mower and pulled him over.

"What's going on," Wright asked the driver of the lawnmower. The man responded he was heading home from Statesboro.

"You rode a lawn mower all the way from Statesboro?," Wright asked. The man responded, "Yes."

Authorities say they discovered the man on the lawnmower had just stolen it and possibly some other items.

"He had a flat screen TV between his legs," said Wright. "He had a hatchet on his waistband and a pair of brass knuckles in his right front pocket."

Wright says he removed the weapons and put the man in the back of the police car while he continued to try to figure out what was going on.

He later learned the man was 21-year-old Daniel Wilbourn who is wanted out of Virginia on nine warrants. Wilbourn is also wanted in Screven County on numerous burglary charges.

Wright says he didn't realize how dangerous this stop could have been.

"It's raised my suspicions where I need to be more cautious on the road as far as safety because it can happen anywhere," he said. "He had this long clothing on and come to find out he had a hatchet on his waistband. It could have went bad at anytime."

Fortunately it didn't and the Effingham County Sheriff's Office got a wanted suspect off the streets and the grass.

Wilbourn is still behind bars in Effingham County.
