SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - Savannah's own Paula Deen is accusing her maid of stealing right in her own home.

Deen's husband, Michael Groover, told police the couple's house keeper, Mary Alice White, stole approximately $100,000 in jewelry and other items. The thefts allegedly happened over a period of about ten months. Groover told police he found White with some of Deen's jewelry.

Some national news outlets reported $10,000 in items were stolen, but WTOC confirmed with Savannah-Chatham Metro Police it was indeed closer to $100,000.

Outside Deen's restaurant The Lady and Sons on Monday night, her fans were surprised anyone would rob the queen of southern cooking.

"I've always loved her because of how generous she is. The theft does surprise me and it's too bad," Beth Driehaus said.

"Who could do that to such a wonderful lady? She is so generous," Karen Minotti said.

Deen fired the housekeeper after learning of the thefts. Police arrested White in May on felony charges.
